In 2012, SoMo—aka Joseph Somers-Morales— independently released his mixtape, My Life, after growing a vast following by uploading popular renditions of new and old classics to YouTube.
A powerful, palpable, and passionate collection, My Life merged R&B spirit with pop soul, showcasing SoMo’s dynamic voice and his songwriting prowess. The mixtape spawned the Texas native’s first hit “Ride,” which began selling 10,000 digital tracks weekly- prior to any radio support or label backing. At the time, the accompanying music video, directed by Dan Gotti, quickly amassed over 3 million views which has since grown to over 19 million. In addition, the mixtape gained SoMo early support from legendary producer Mannie Fresh, who appeared in the video for his song “Kings and Queens.”
As “Ride” continued to gain steam, SoMo hit the road for a sold out headline tour. Struck by all of his independent success, Republic Records reached out and offered him a deal in October 2013.
In February of 2014, SoMo released his self-titled debut album, which entered at #6 on the Billboard charts and #1 on the iTunes Album Chart. His breakout single “Ride” was certified platinum and remained in the Top 10 of the iTunes R&B chart for 25 consecutive weeks. National Television performances on VH-1’s Big Morning Buzz, The Arsenio Hall Show, and BET’s 106 & Park soon followed.
Simultaneously, SoMo released a cover song every single Sunday as part of his “SoMo Sunday” campaign. Speaking directly to his fans, he offered up new music each week, and the series has accrued nearly 225 million views on YouTube. In addition to going viral, the videos have garnered SoMo support from peers such as Wale, Ginuwine and Trey Songz.
In the year since the release, SoMo has been on the road touring, as well as working tirelessly in the studio with other artists and songwriters, both on remixes, outside projects, and his sophomore album. These collaborations have included artists like Jeremih, Ty Dolla $ign, K Camp, Kirko Bangz, Hoodie Allen, The Rascals and Babyface. In addition, he received the 2015 BMI R&B/Hip-Hop “Social Star Award.”
2015 saw him release his latest mixtape, My Life II. Driven by the seductively catchy single, “Hide & Freak” [featuring Trey Songz], the record debuted in the Top 10 of the iTunes Overall Top Albums Chart and #2 on iTunes Top R&B/Soul Albums Chart. It also set the stage for the launch of his 2015 36-city North American headline tour, “The Fallin’ Up Tour,” supported by buzzy newcomer Jordan Bratton and fellow Texan Kirko Bangz. He’s also in the midst of preparing his second full-length album for release very soon.
